Open educational resources (OER) have long been recognized for making course materials more accessible and affordable. Now, new research from AAC&U makes the case for understanding OER implementation as something more: a high-impact teaching and learning practice that supports student engagement, persistence, and success.
The research makes an important distinction: realizing the potential of OER is not simply a matter of replacing one set of course materials with another. Outcomes depend on how OER is implemented, including the institutional environment, pedagogical choices, and support available to faculty. That makes the recognition of OER implementation as a high-impact practice not only a milestone, but an opportunity—to make the case for greater institutional support, expanding access to high-impact learning, and strengthening the role of open education in advancing student success.
